 The First discovery of the Arabic Papyrus in Egypt dated to 1824, when some farmers found two Arabic Papyrus inside a small jar near Sakara Pyramid. This was the first time people knew something about the Arabic Papyrus.

The Papyrus collection of the Egyptian Library has been known to the scientific world for a considerable time. The modest beginning of this collection may date back to very early times, but the great body of it was brought together under the management of Dr. B. Moritz, head of the Egyptian National Library (1896-1911), who was the first to realize the importance of Islamic Scholarship. During this period Dr. Moritz collected thousands of rare and important papyrus of Fostat, Bahnasa, Fayoum, Ahnasya Ashmonyer, Kom Askaw and Edfu.

Between 1903-1905 Dr. Moritz bought a very rare collection of Egyptian Papyrus found in Fayoum City from one of the amateurs in Egypt called Michel Casira. In addition, another Arabic Papyrus, which was kept in the Egyptian Museum, found during making excavations in Upper Egypt. Moreover, in 1906 National Library has got a very important and rare collection of AP texts (about 161) from a one of the Antique's merchant in Giza called Ali El-gabri.

Later on, indeed, there were new addition to the El collection which were gradually increasing up to four thousands now.

What had been published of the ELAP collection?

Dr. Moritz (1905) was the first who published some of the El collection in his book "Arabic Paleography". In 1910, he published some texts of the AP in the Islamic Encycolpedia under title "Arabic Handwriting"

In 1912 the Orientalist L. Catetani published some texts of the AP in P5 of the periodical "Yearbook of Islam"

(L. Caetane Annole d L. Islam).

The Orientalist J.V.Karabacek published (by the help given by C. H. Becker on 1911) some AP of the collection dated to Ommiad Era of the governor Quara ibn Shorak Alabse (90-96 H/709-716 AC).

From 1912-1923, the studying and publishing in El collection of AP have been suspended.

In 1924 Dr. A. Grohmann got eight texts of papyrus of this collection, which has been sent by B. Moritz. The Following year, 1925, after the first world war Dr. Grohman visited Egypt and has been informed about this important collection of papyrus and realized its scientific values and historical importance.

In the Year 1930 Dr. Grohman delivered a Lecture about the Science of the Arabic Papyrus in the Egyptian Geographical Society. This Lecture has been printed in the Printing house of The Egyptian National Library in 1930, which has been translated by Tawfik Askarose.

In Year 1934, after the end the world war an invitation of the Royal Society of the Old Papyrus Science (Socitété oyale Egyptian de Papyrologie) has been addressed to Dr. Grohman to study and publish some papyrus of the Egyptian National Library. The First volume of this study was on 21th, August 1934 which included about 70 Arabic Papyrus with a title "Arabic Papyrus in the Egyptian Library. The Second volume, which Grohman wrote its introduction in 1936 and printed in 1955.

Now "Department of Arabic Papyrus" has been established in the Egyptian National Library, moreover, "center of researchers Service in Arabic Papyrus" has been established under supervision of Dr. Said Maghawri, who is a specialist researcher in the field of Arabic Papyrus The Frist Part of the Complete index of Arabic Papyrus in The Egyptian National Library. (at Press). The index Consists of a Comprehensive information about Papyrus regarding a number of registration, date, subject, condition, name of the publisher and other informations.

From the other hand, a practical is in process to restore the Papyrus subjected to damage, in addition to microfilming this group in order to exchange information with the international Papyrus group through using the high technology of (C.D. Rom).

Moreover, there are some University students and researchers in the fields of history, civilization, organization, arts and Islamic monuments who use "Center of Researchers in the Field of the Arabic Papyrus"

Some rare Arabic Papyrus in the National Library

There are some rare Arabic Papyrus in the book "The Comprehensive in the prophet's traditions" which has been written by the leggiest Abdallah Bin wahb Bin Muslem 125-197 Hijrah / 743-813 A.C. The tolal number of Pages of this book is 1990.

This book which has been found in Edfo of Upper Egypt is kept in the National Library under register No (2123-Modern). This book has been Published by the French Institution for the oriental studies in Cairo through some articles of doctor David Weill, Le Djami Ibn Wahb (Text, Planches et commentaire) 1948-If.A.O. Cairo, 1939.

In addition, The National Library has got a very important and rare of the Protocols attributes to the era of the Ommaid Caliph Abdelmalek Ibn Marwan and the correspondenc of the Ommaid governer Quara Ibn Sherake Al Absi 90-96 Hijrab / 709-716 A.c.

There are also a very importandt and rare marriage contracts which have been written on Papyrus and goats skin, some of these marriage contracts are between the Arabs and the Egyptian Coptic, also the contracts of buying, selling, working, and receipts of Gazya and Kharag and the records and log books of commercial and financial articles, and some religious and literature texts, and different papers concerning commerce, industry, agriculture, and real estate.
