It was established on September 24, 1963 under the name of "National History Studies Centre" and inaugurated in June 1964. It was given the name of "Centre of Documents and Contemporary History of Egypt" in July 27, 1967.

CDCHE is responsible for conducting a comprehensive survey of all possible documents, whether available in Egypt or abroad, pertaining to the contemporary history of Egypt. The presentation of analytical catalogues and publication of attested copies of the original collections, deepens the consciousness of national identity by authenticating Egypt's modern history and the role played by its prominent personalities in the national movement in pursuit of autonomy.

In order to achieve these goals, the centre works through the framework stated below.

bullet

Collecting all documents, pertaining to contemporary history of Egypt, from Ministries, Government Agencies and individuals in order to prepare extensive studies intended for publication.

bullet

Conducting substantive research and studies on the contemporary history of Egypt, the data for which is derived from reference books, documents, periodicals, diaries and memoranda of national leaders, under the supervision of professionals working in the field.

bullet

Rendering to professionals, researchers and modern history scholars all possible facilities for the examination of the diaries and memoranda of ex-politicians, Arabic and foreign periodicals and minutes of meetings of the Representative Councils in Egypt and Britain. This supplements the role played by the centre as a connecting link between researchers and other circles where information of their interest is available.

bullet

Publishing the research and studies undertaken by the centre's professionals so that students of history and general readers may fully benefit from such completed substantive research activities.

bullet

Issuance of a monthly series entitled "Renaissance of Egypt", which assists in bringing about a better understanding of the modern history of Egypt.
