Being a central department affiliated to the National Library and Archives, the National Archives is divided into the following:

1.General Department for Documents collection and Preservation (DCP)
It is responsible for the implementation of the NA's policy partaining to the collection, preservation and registration of all documents partaining to the modern and contemporary history of Egypt and make thereof available to the researchers. It is also assigned to supervise the stock, prepare reports on the restoration and conservation of the NA's works, also supervise and organize the participation of the NA ' s delegates in the Archives' Permanent Committees of the State Administration units.

The DCP primarily includes the following departments :

1. Documents Sorting Dept.

2. Documents Collection Dept.

3. Documents Registration Dept.

4. Researchers' Advisory Services Dept.

2. General Department for Documents Technical Processes

It is responsible for the classification, cataloguing, translation and exchange of the documents. It is also assigned to prepare bibliographies, historical abstracts, edit some of the documents collections, and make thereof available to the researchers.

The DTP comprises the following :

1. Documents Cataloguing Dept.

2. Documents Classification Dept.

3. Translation Dept.

4. Exchange Dept.

3. General Department for Documents Restoration and Conservation

It is responsible for the restoration, Conservation, microphotography and binding of the documents. The DRC comprises the following:

1. Documents Restoration and Disinfection Dept.

2. Microphotography Dept.

3. Binding Dept.

A statement of the Archives retained in the custody of the National Archives' premises is given below.

These archives are rendered in Arabic, Turkish, English, French, German and few of them are rendered in the Amharic language.

Such great amount of archives cover the 19th. and 20th. centuries, in addition to the "CALENDAR ARCHIVES" and legal deeds, whose archives date back to the Fatimid era Ayyubid Mameluke and Ottoman eras.
